Your first question, step by step

Keep Tally. Connect your AI assistant. Begin with a number you already know.

Before you begin

You need the Windows computer where you use Tally and a desktop AI app that supports local connections. Your Tally and AI account are separate from this free app. This is an early release: start with a sample company.

1. Download and install

Get Tally2AI for Windows and run the downloaded file. Follow the installer, then open the new Tally Bridge shortcut. Read the agreement and privacy notice. Optional usage reporting can be turned off during first-run setup.

Windows may show an unknown-publisher warning because the app does not have a Windows publisher certificate. Follow your organization’s software policy.

2. Sign in with your membership email

Use the email you joined Tech Essentials with. Free members can use Tally2AI. Enter the code sent to your inbox to activate this computer. If you are not a member yet, join the blog, then request a new code in the app.

The initial allowance is two computers. Membership is checked about once a day when you use the app; access lasts up to 24 hours after a successful check. You need internet when the next check is due. A shorter membership deadline may apply.

3. Open your company in Tally

Keep Tally running on the same computer, with the company you want to use open. In Tally2AI, open Tally connection. It looks for Tally and shows the companies it can find. If yours is missing, open it in Tally and choose Check again.

Tally is open, but no company appears

Tally needs its local connection setting (called the XML server) enabled. Ask the person who manages Tally to enable it and confirm its port. Under Tally connection → Advanced: connection settings, use Test and save. If several connections appear, select the one for your intended Tally company. This does not change your Tally license or create a company.

4. Connect your AI desktop app

On My apps & permissions, choose Connect an app. Select your supported desktop app and the company you want it to access. Begin with the default view-only access. Restart or reconnect your assistant if prompted.

The assistant must support local connections under its own plan and policies. ChatGPT in a web browser is not connected by this setup. For compatibility and other assistants, see Connect an AI app.

5. Ask one familiar question

Finish setup, open your AI assistant and confirm it can see your selected company. Try a ledger or stock item you know:

“Show the current ledger balance for [customer name] in [company name]. Don’t change any records.”

Compare the answer with Tally. Then try a follow-up: “Show the entries behind that balance.” AI can make mistakes; check its selection and totals before making decisions.

When you come back tomorrow

Keep Tally and your company open. Use the Tally Bridge shortcut to reopen the controls. Use Edit permissions on your app’s home card to change access without setting it up again, or Disconnect app to remove access. Updates checks for app updates; Settings → Privacy & analytics controls optional reporting.

Keep view-only access while learning. Editing and deleting entries are separate permissions. Before enabling them, test with your accountant on a sample company. If a change has an uncertain outcome, check it before asking again.
